While other musicians typically vary their fixed repertoire only in subtle nuances, every
performance by Klaus Schulze remains inherently unpredictable and defies easy foresight. His
former bandmate Edgar Froese (Tangerine Dream) once employed a vivid metaphor when
describing the practice of free improvisation with electronic instruments on stage: he likened it to
a skydive, where one can never be entirely certain that the parachute will actually open. This
held particularly true during the era of temperamental analog synthesizers—yet Klaus Schulze
has maintained this working method unchanged throughout the years. He is, therefore, one of
the few musicians to have successfully carried this art of improvisation across the divide from
the analog into the digital age. In this regard, Schulze’s fundamental principle remains as valid
as ever: "The important thing is that I have no preconceived idea when I step onto the stage."
What might initially appear to be a paradox—or even smack of arbitrariness—is, in fact, the
absolute opposite: it represents the integration of every factor present in that single, decisive
moment—at once a complete letting go and a simultaneous arrival. The Amsterdam concert—
now finally available here—marks the definitive highlight of the tour in 2009. This may be partly
due to the fact that, following performances in Warsaw and Berlin, it was already the third
concert of the tour, and all participants had by this point become perfectly attuned to one
another. Yet, this alone cannot explain the magic and the breathtaking dramatic arc of the entire

performance. The non-verbal, emotionally profound interplay between Klaus Schulze and Lisa
Gerrard has rarely felt as cohesive—or constituted such a true, unified whole—as it does here.
